The third and final main grassland category is the Temperate Grasslands. The Temperate Grasslands are depicted on the map above as the color brown. These grasslands take up more space than the Steppe Grasslands but less space than the Savanna. These grasslands are located north of the tropic of cancer (23.5 degrees north) and south of the tropic of Capricorn (23.5 degrees south). Looking at the map, we can infer that temperate grasslands are found in various parts of the world including the pampas of South America, plains of North America, and Eurasia.

Bison are prominate herbavores in the temperate grassland ecosystem. They graze on the native grasses, disturbing the soil with their hooves. This advantage allows plants to flourish.
The praire dog roam among the bison. Their species name is Ludovicianus. These first level consumers feed on the surrounding grasses.
Other aniamals among the bison and prarie dog are: pronghorns, deer, mice, rabbits, grouse, badgers, skunks, meadowlarks, various owls, garter snakes, rattlesnakes, and red-tailed hawks.

The temperate grassland typically receives between 10 and 35 inches of precipitation a year. The majority of the precipitation falls in the late spring and early summer. In some temperate grasslands, light snow serves as a reservoir of moisture for the beginning of the growing season. The grasslands maintain stabilized by the occasional drought and fire.

MISCELLANEOUS FACTS
  • Temperate grasslands have nutrient rich soils caused from the growth and decay of deep, grass roots. The rotted roots are able to hold the soil together and provide a source of food for living plants.
  • Overgrazing by livestock and plowing are the two greatest threats to temperate grasslands.
  • Since the development of the steel plow, almost half of these grasslands have been converted to agricultural fields due to their rich soil. About 47 percent of temperate grasslands have been converted to agriculture or urban development.
